A SUSTAINABLE LEGACY

Ecologically sustainable practices within the funeral industry have been the topic of ongoing debate. The carbon footprint created by the cremation process versus that which is created by burial interment is comparable.
However, cremation continues to lead the way in consumer choice. That’s why it is central to the Wooling Hill ethos, that we utilise sustainable practices such as regeneration of new tree growth to offset the inevitable eco-footprint we leave behind.

The planting ceremony of your memorial tree will be an opportunity for family and friends to come together and reflect on a loved one that has passed and to plant new life in their honour.

The growth and lifespan of your tree will be a testament to the perpetuity and renewal of life and a legacy for family generations to be proud of. Family and friends can contribute to the care and growth of the tree when they visit their living memorial.

The maintenance and growth progress of each tree is meticulously recorded by our horticulturalist and garden team in conjunction with state-of-the-art I-tree analysis software.

TREE OWNERS WILL RECEIVE A REPORT AND UPDATES ON THE HEALTH AND GROWTH OF THEIR LIVING MEMORIAL. WOOLING HILL’S “FAMILY TREE REPORT” PROVIDES TREE OWNERS WITH THE FOLLOWING DATA REGARDING THEIR TREE’S POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON THE PLANET:

Runoff Prevention (Gallons)

Reductions in annual stormwater runoff due to rainfall interception by tree canopy.

Heat Prevention (Therms)

Contribution of the urban forest toward conserving energyin terms of reduced natural gas use in winter (measured in therms).

Pollutants removed (lb)

Trees improve air quality when air pollutants (O3, NO2,SO2, Particulate Matter) are deposited on tree surfaces and absorbed, and fromreduced emissions from power plants (NO2, Particulate Matter, VOC’s (VolatileOrganic Compounds), SO2) due to reduced electricity use (see EnergyConservation definition). This is the measured amount of this benefit in lbs.

Carbon Stored (lb)

All carbon dioxide stored in the urban forest over the life of the trees as a result of sequestration (in pounds). This measurement is not the same as annual carbon sequestered.

Carbon Sequestered (lb)

The amount of carbon annually removed from the atmosphere and stored in the canopy’s biomass (in pounds).

Carbon Avoided (lb)

Annual reductions in atmospheric CO2 due to sequestration by trees and reduced emissions from power plants due to reduced energy use (in pounds).
